View State Objectives for Fall Prevention

June 2004

Welcome to the RI FALL PREVENTION PARTNERSHIP website sponsored by the RI Long-Term-Care Coordinating Council. One of the Council’s goals is to reduce disabilities and the associated need for long-term care services. This year, the Council selected falls as a focus for its disability-prevention activities.

Falls are a leading cause of injury deaths and trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults. Of all fall-related fractures, hip fractures cause the greatest numbers of deaths and lead to the most severe health problems and reduced quality of life. Among persons age 75 and older, those who fall are four to five times more likely to be admitted to a long-term care facility for a year or longer.

To shine the spotlight on falls and what can be done to prevent them, we have organized the RI FALL PREVENTION PARTNERSHIP. The Partnership will work in 2004 - 2005 to coordinate fall prevention activities, to share information on available resources and best practices and to promote fall prevention strategies and programs throughout the health and aging services care systems.

We hope you find this website to be a useful resource. If you would like to join the PARTNERSHIP or would like further information about its activities, please contact my office at 401-222-2371.
