Notes:
Many older adults and their family members are unaware of the risk factors for falling. Providing both oral and written information on risk factors for falls and on the consequences of falling will make people more aware of their personal risk factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic.
Providing home safety checklists will allow the older adult to evaluate their own home for potential risk and will reinforce any educational information you may have provided. Sample checklists are included in this manual. A list of home safety measures can be posted in an area where it will easily be seen by the older adult and also by family members. When family members are knowledgeable about the risk factors, they can help to keep the home safe.
